I’m a bit late to the party (here on this blog), but I just want to take a moment to congratulate @dave for the incredible milestone of blogging non-stop for the past 30 years! There are very few (if any!) bloggers who have been doing this for as long as that. Even the Wayback Machine doesn’t have records of those first years (as it was β¦

Switched my new finnish blog from Eleventy (& Netlify) to micro.blog just now. Surprisingly painless switch! Synergy ftw! π

Aaand the finnish version is live now too! - juhaliikala.fi/kahden-bl… π

Two blogs, two languages
In my endless quest of “trying out new blogging things”, I lured myself into a new experiment for this weekend: What if I keep my existing (in english) Micro.blog site where it is at micro.juhaliikala.com, but also start a Finnish variation of the site on a separate domain at juhaliikala.fi. Would that fly? In other words; will I end up β¦

Got my custom micro.blog theme in good speed this weekend, aye! See it in action at https://blog.juhaliikala.com/ . Still ton of things to tweak, improve and implement, but eventually, the idea is to publish this as a micro.blog theme/plugin that β¦

So, as we now have three main ways for subscribing to a blog/publication; email newsletter, RSS and ActivityPub (handle), which will win? Some blogs even add a fourth way: Subscribing via WhatsApp / Telegram / Etc. Will RSS and ActivityPub β¦

Excited to see what @john.onolan.org and team Ghost is cooking up here: activitypub.ghost.org. I find the new subscriber flow especially interesting (signup with email or ActivityPub handle). Some ideas here for future micro.blog additions too β¦

Aaand back to the “real human” type of profile picture again, after rockin the cartoon avatar for a while. In this age of AI generated pictures, having a “real human face” as the profile image feels nicer I guess π

New profile image, yo! π
Thanks @maique for pointing me in the right direction for finding Andy’s work! π

I miss those early days when most people I know from blogging, web projects, online biz and related endeavours were on Twitter. Both in Finland and globally. It was so easy to connect and stay connected with everyone.
Fast forward to today, and we β¦

Soooo.. Threads just launched their web version, cool. Unless you’re in EU region, which I am. Can’t use the app, can’t use the web. Twitter is a mess, left ages ago. STILL no Bluesky invite either (although I joined waiting list β¦
:
Fighting the urge for website do-overs, Threads in EU update and getting acquainted with MarsEdit
I've been surprisingly happy in the way this site came together.
However, like it happens nearly every time after I've launched a new thing, this time was no different: Iβve been already thinking about doing it again from a scratch.

Back from the holidays, more website tinkering ensues!
During the holiday, I didn’t do much else than enjoy the vacation views & feels and post some stories and photos on Instagram from the trip. Didn’t even bring my laptop with me, holiday well spent!
Having said that, I feel excited to get back β¦

So, Elon want’s to transform Twitter into “everything app” X (handle all our shopping, banking, messaging, etc.), plant a microchip to our brains, build an AI that understands the universe and then.. when it all goes south, escape β¦

Made some minor(ish) design tweaks to the blog today. New background from Santorini trip, of course! π Also, dropped the newsletter subscribe option for now. I personally feel it doesn’t make much sense to send these (mostly) microblog type of β¦

Well it was fun while it lasted. As you may have heard, Meta has blocked EU users from accessing Threads. I noticed I wasn’t able to publish, comment or do pretty much anything else than browse the main feed in the app someday last week. No β¦

Thank you for the shiny stickers @manton! They arrived to mailbox while we were on our summer holiday trip. Just opened the envelope yesterday. π

Threads by Instagram is not available in Europe (at least for now)? At least I don’t see it in Finnish appstore. For someone who can try it, is it ActivityPub compatible? Can I use it with micro.blog somehow (follow people, respond to threads, β¦

Curious if the Apple’s upcoming Journal app will turn our to be something that would make me keep a personal journal. Micro.blog is great for public journaling, but I’ve never really used an app for private journaling. Tbh, it’s β¦

Threads, by Instagram - Could that be the name of the Meta’s answer to Twitter? It might. I’m actually more than mildly excited about this. Especially if it really does have ActivityPub support built in. Instagram userbase suddenly β¦

Papa's got a brand new blog
Well, I did it again. Started a new blog, that is.
Oh wait, that’s not entirely true. It ain’t new, as I’ve used it on and off for micro blogging. But I haven’t used it for longer posts like this one. Oh, and it has fresh coat of paint too!
The site runs on micro.blog, a blogging platform that also has elements of social β¦

Third time’s the charm? π To get better aligned with the whole Fediverse concept, I aliased my Mastodon account (@juhaliikala@me.dm) once more and will be using @juha@juhaliikala.com as my “main Fediverse home” from now until β¦

Testing testing! Substack’s RSS reader seems to pick content for each post from my blog sidebar for some reason. Testing if that glitch continues to happen with this new post π€

Something going on with Mastodon cross-posting from micro.blog. Previous few entries never made to Mastodon for some reason. Testing out once more if disconnecting / reconnecting auth helped. π€

I wonder if anyone have a Bluesky invite to share? Would love to try it out! π

Been really enjoying Silo (Apple TV+) so far. Certainly a positive surprise! 8/10 from me. πΊ

Ah, so the last thing I used Twitter for is now gone too. Used the search (without Twitter account) for browsing comments on some local Finnish news. So be it. The end.

Singapore pooltime! ππΈπ¬ It’s been 4 years since our last visit. Awesome to be back! π Next up, Bali π΄

Not sure if the micro.blog landing page has looked the way it does for a long time, but I really like it! Love the clean look and the way it highlights the best parts of using the platform. Great work @manton et al. ππ

Still wrapping my head around the “best practice” on how to use my main Mastodon account and this blog’s “account” (@juha@juhaliikala.com) side by side. For now, I think I’ll just boost posts that I’d also β¦

For many years, it has been my December activity to go through those web/social media accounts that I don’t really use much and “cut out the fat”. It’s always a surprise to realize how many new places I’ve made accounts β¦

As micro.blog supports crossposting stuff from here to Mastodon, let’s try that too! Curious to learn how I’ll end up using these two side by side. I guess time and (perhaps) trial and error will tell π

Is this thing on? I guess so π In addition to micro.blog(ging), I’m now also exploring what Mastodon is all about @juhaliikala@masto.io. Come say hi! ππ

So, I did went the route of deactivating my Twitter account a week ago, but following this good advice from @thedragstate@aus.social, decided to reactivate and just lock it. Let it rot. In the meanwhile, I guess I’ll find a Mastodon instance β¦

Yeah, it’s time. Gone fishing is now in effect. Been mulling over the though way before the “latest developments”, but as the feeling has only grown stronger since, it is time. Let’s reconsider at some point, maybe.

I find that micro.blog has the same kind of good vibe Twitter used to have in the early days. Browsing and reading other people’s updates here leave me feeling good. The opposite is true with my Twitter feed, which has turned into (mostly) doom β¦

Hi @jeffmueller! Is ADN finder still a thing? I was trying to add myself to that list, but I don’t think it worked out. Or is there a manual process involved after submitting? π Cheers!

Where did that weekend go? π Well, coffee to the engine and toward this weeks adventures! Started exploring ConvertKit on Saturday. Thinking of starting a newsletter, in addition to these somewhat random micro blog writings. Let’s see!

Giving a try to “Twitter for Professionals” mode in the app. Could not find software developer, maker or creator “profession” there, so ended up using “Blogger” π Let’s see how this feature turns out! π

No Twitter backup quite yet, so won’t be putting up the “gone fishing sign” today at least π In the meantime, I might just spend some time and tune up micro.blog styles and settings. That should be a good exercise for this evening!

This evening I find myself seriously contemplating the idea of quitting Twitter. OR at least hanging a virtual “gone to fishing, might or might not come back” sign on my profile. π
It’s been years since I last enjoyed using the β¦

After a brief sidetracking on WordPress, I switched my blogging efforts back to micro.blog. WP was fine (it always is), but the ease of publishing via micro.blog just felt like a better road to take right now. Let’s see how this goes! :)

I’ve been mulling over the thought of building and selling a few website / blogging themes this year. Just not 100% decided on to which “platform”. Probably Ghost or Eleventy, or why not a micro.blog theme even? WordPress could be β¦

Back to micro posting! While putting bits and pieces together on my personal blog, I also wanted to start writing note type of (micro) posts. For me the reasoning being - that would lower the otherwise high threshold of hitting the publish button β¦
